Bathroom Cleaning: How to Remove Limescale and Hard-Water Stains
Quick answer

Limescale is a mineral crust left by hard water. Remove it with a bathroom descaler or white vinegar on taps and glass, scrub grout with a brush, squeegee after showers and never mix bleach with vinegar or acid cleaners. Avoid acids on marble and natural stone.

If your taps, shower glass and tiles are covered in chalky white patches that come back soon after cleaning, you are dealing with limescale. It forms when hard water evaporates and leaves minerals — mainly calcium and magnesium — behind. Many homes in Pakistan have mineral-rich water, so limescale is a common bathroom problem. Here is how to tackle it properly.

What causes limescale?

Every drop of water that dries on a surface leaves a thin mineral film. Over weeks, that film thickens into a hard, white or yellowish crust, especially around taps, shower heads, the base of the toilet and on glass. Regular wiping prevents it; once it has formed, you need an acidic descaler or a long soak.

What you need

  • A bathroom descaler or white vinegar (for taps and glass)
  • A soft brush and non-scratch sponge
  • Microfiber cloths, gloves and a squeegee
Important: never mix bleach with vinegar or acid-based descalers — it releases toxic fumes. Avoid acidic products on natural stone or marble, which they can etch. Always ventilate the room and follow the product label.

Taps and fittings

Soak a cloth in vinegar or descaler, wrap it around the tap and leave it for 20–30 minutes. Remove, scrub lightly with a soft brush, rinse and buff dry for a shine. For shower heads, soak them in a bag or bowl of vinegar if they can be unscrewed.

Glass shower screens and mirrors

Spray vinegar solution or a glass cleaner, let it sit for a few minutes, and wipe. Finish with a squeegee from top to bottom. A quick squeegee after every shower prevents most buildup.

Tiles and grout

Apply a bathroom tile cleaner and let it work. Scrub grout lines with a stiff brush, then rinse thoroughly. Dark or mouldy grout needs a suitable mould remover, applied separately and never combined with other chemicals.

Toilet, sink and basin

Use toilet cleaner under the rim and leave it for the recommended time before brushing. Clean the basin and overflow hole, wipe around the base of the toilet and clean the hinges, which are often missed.

Prevent limescale coming back

  • Wipe taps and glass dry after use.
  • Squeegee shower walls and glass.
  • Ventilate the bathroom to reduce damp and mould.
  • Do a quick weekly wipe-down; a deeper clean monthly.
