A deep clean works top to bottom through every room: ceilings and fans, kitchen degreasing, bathroom descaling and grout, bedrooms, living areas and often-missed spots like window tracks and behind furniture. Most homes need one every three to six months.
Regular cleaning keeps a home tidy. Deep cleaning resets it. It goes beyond the visible surfaces to remove the build-up that accumulates in corners, on fittings and in places you rarely look at. This checklist shows what a proper deep clean includes, room by room, so you can do it yourself or check what a professional deep home cleaning service should cover.
Before you start
- Work from top to bottom: ceilings and fans first, floors last, so dust falls onto areas you haven't cleaned yet.
- Open windows for ventilation and never mix cleaning chemicals.
- Gather cloths, a bucket, a mop, brushes and the products for each room before beginning.
Kitchen
- Degrease the hood surface, backsplash tiles and the wall behind the stove.
- Wipe cabinet fronts, handles and the tops of cabinets where grease and dust collect.
- Clean the stove top, burners and drip areas; soak removable parts.
- Scrub the sink, taps and drain; wipe the outside of the fridge, oven and microwave.
- Mop the floor and clean along the skirting.

Bathrooms
- Descale taps, shower heads and glass — see our limescale guide.
- Scrub tile grout lines with a brush and a suitable bathroom cleaner.
- Clean and disinfect the toilet inside, outside and around the base and hinges.
- Wipe mirrors, shelves and fittings; clean the drain cover and floor.
Bedrooms
- Dust fans, light fixtures, curtain rails, tops of wardrobes and headboards.
- Wipe switches, door handles and doors.
- Clean under and behind the bed, where dust gathers most.
- Wash or air bedding and mattress covers; vacuum or sweep and mop the floor.
Living and dining areas
- Dust shelves, décor, TV units and picture frames.
- Wipe window sills, tracks and glass inside.
- Vacuum sofas and rugs; wipe wooden or glass tables.
- Mop or vacuum floors and clean skirting boards.
Often-missed spots
- Window tracks and mesh screens
- Door tops and frames
- Air-conditioner and exhaust fan covers
- Behind and under furniture and appliances
- Switch plates, remote controls and handles

| Time | Shorter | Longer — usually several hours for an average home |
| Best for | Ongoing upkeep | Seasonal reset, before events, new homes, after long gaps |
