Remove kitchen grease by switching off the gas, applying a degreaser from the hood downwards, cleaning tiles and cabinet fronts in small sections, soaking stove parts in hot soapy water and using baking soda paste on burnt-on residue. Never mix cleaning chemicals.
Cooking in a Pakistani kitchen — frying, tempering spices, slow-cooking masalas — produces a lot of oil vapour. It settles on tiles, cabinets, the hood and the stove as a sticky film that traps dust and turns brown over time. The good news: grease is easy to deal with when you use the right method. Here is how to do it safely.
What you need
- A kitchen degreaser (or warm water with dishwashing liquid for light grease)
- Microfiber cloths and a non-scratch sponge
- A soft brush or old toothbrush for corners and grout
- Rubber gloves and a bucket of warm water
- Baking soda for burnt-on residue
Step 1: Start at the top — the hood
Spray degreaser on the hood's outer surface, leave it for the time stated on the label, and wipe along the grain of stainless steel. Remove and soak the filter in hot water with dishwashing liquid, then scrub gently and rinse. Dry fully before refitting.
Step 2: Backsplash tiles and walls
Work in small sections so the product does not dry on the tile. Apply degreaser, wait a few minutes, and wipe with a damp cloth. Use a soft brush on grout lines, then rinse with clean water and dry to avoid streaks.
Step 3: Cabinet fronts and handles
Cabinets near the stove collect the stickiest grease. Use a mild solution of warm water and dishwashing liquid on laminate or painted finishes and avoid soaking wood. Wipe handles and edges, where hands transfer oil, then dry with a clean cloth.
Step 4: The stove and burners
- Remove grates and burner caps and soak them in hot, soapy water.
- Make a paste of baking soda and a little water for burnt-on spots; leave it for 15–20 minutes, then scrub gently.
- Wipe the stove surface and the areas around the knobs with a cloth, taking care not to let liquid enter the gas ports.
Step 5: Sink, counters and floor
Scrub the sink and taps, clean the drain strainer, wipe counters with a suitable cleaner, and finish by mopping the floor. Greasy floors can be slippery, so rinse well.
How to keep grease under control
- Run the exhaust fan or hood while cooking and for a few minutes afterwards.
- Wipe the stove and splash zone after cooking while the residue is still fresh.
- Clean the hood filter regularly — monthly is a good habit for heavy cooking households.
- Use splatter guards when frying.
