Reduce dust by cleaning top to bottom, using damp microfiber instead of dry dusters, vacuuming or mopping instead of dry sweeping, using doormats, washing fabrics regularly, cleaning fans and vents and decluttering surfaces.
If you wipe your furniture in the morning and find dust again by evening, you are not alone. Dry weather, wind, traffic and construction around Rawalpindi and Islamabad make dust a constant companion. You cannot remove it completely, but you can reduce it significantly with a few smart habits.
Where dust comes from
- Outdoor dust entering through doors, windows and ventilation gaps
- Fabric fibres from clothing, bedding, curtains and carpets
- Skin flakes and pet hair
- Cooking residue and general indoor activity
1. Clean in the right order
Start at the top (ceilings, fans, shelves) and finish with the floor. Cleaning the floor first means dust you disturb later lands on it again.
2. Use damp microfiber, not dry feather dusters
Dry dusting often just moves dust around. Slightly damp microfiber cloths trap it. Wring them out well on electronics and wooden furniture.
3. Vacuum or mop instead of just sweeping
Dry sweeping lifts fine dust into the air. Vacuuming, or a damp mop on hard floors, collects it instead.
4. Control what comes in
- Use doormats at every entrance and remove shoes at the door.
- Keep windows closed during dust storms and windy afternoons.
- Clean window tracks and mesh screens, where dust collects heavily.
5. Wash fabrics regularly
- Wash bedding weekly and curtains every few months.
- Vacuum sofas and rugs frequently.
- Reduce clutter and decorative items that trap dust.
6. Look after fans and air vents
Ceiling fans and air-conditioner vents spread dust through the room when they are dirty. Clean them regularly, and have AC filters serviced as recommended by the manufacturer.
7. Declutter
Every ornament, book and stack of paper is a dust collector. Fewer items mean quicker cleaning.
A simple weekly dust routine
- Dust ceiling fans and high shelves.
- Wipe surfaces, furniture and electronics with a damp microfiber cloth.
- Vacuum or sweep floors, then mop.
- Wash bedding and wipe door handles and switches.
